چکیده

We introduce physically motivated interfaces for playing virtual musical instruments, and we suggest that they lie somewhere in between commonplace interfaces and haptic interfaces in terms of their complexity. Next, we review guitarlike interfaces, and we design an interface to a virtual string. The excitation signal and pitch are sensed separately using two independent string segments. These parameters control a two-axis digital waveguide virtual string, which models vibrations in the horizontal and vertical transverse axes as well as the coupling between them. Finally, we consider the advantages of using a multi-axis pickup for measuring the excitation signal.

'GXtar', an interface using guitar techniques

In this paper we describe a new guitar-like musical controller. The 'GXtar' is an instrument which takes as a starting point a guitar but his role is to bring different and new musical possibilities while preserving the spirit and techniques of guitar. Therefore, it was conceived and carried out starting from the body of an electric guitar. The fingerboard of this guitar was equipped with two l...

A Tangible User Interface for Playing Virtual Acoustics

In this thesis the development of a digital musical instrument (DMI) playing virtual architectural spaces in the manner of a musical instrument is presented. The structure of the instrument is based on the implementation of an Auditory Virtual Environment (AVE) approach. The AVE approach comprises a geometric room model enabling real-time acoustic modeling of rectangular room geometries and sup...

Tangible Sound: Musical Instrument Using Fluid Media

In this paper, we introduce “ Tangible Sound,” a musical instrument with a novel user interface that uses water. Like music, fluids cannot be physically grasped because their shape is constantly changing. We thus believe that water is a suitable interface for performing flowing music. We created a live, hands-on installation that uses the flow of water as an input medium to control the intuitiv...

The Vbow: Two Versions of a Virtual Violin Bow Controller

The vBow is a haptic musical controller human-computer interface, which simulates the forcefeedback of a bow on a violin string, while driving a bowed-string physical model. It is both a musical instrument for expressing the musical gestures of a performer, and a tool for testing friction and vibration models, and the responsiveness of physical model sound synthesis.

Advancements in Actuated Musical Instruments

This article presents recent developments in actuated musical instruments created by the authors, who also describe an ecosystemic model of actuated performance activities that blur traditional boundaries between the physical and virtual elements of musical interfaces. Actuated musical instruments are physical instruments that have been endowed with virtual qualities controlled by a computer in...
